Designed and built in 2019 to serve a robust sacred music program and to complement an expansion of the pipe organ within the very limited footprint of the nineteenth century choir loft, these custom interlocking cork and red oak platform risers were designed by Daniel DeGreve to offer opportunities for flexibility, comfort, and support of good chorister arrangement. The new risers replaced a set of prefabricated metal risers that were narrow, steeply stepped, lacking guardrails, and incapable of accommodating chairs. While the new risers are rectangular and hold straight rows of chairs, there is sufficient room for the choir members to form curved rows when standing, which is a preferred choral arrangement for the singing of chant and polyphony. A series of hidden cleats holds the individual riser platforms together and allows them to be taken apart to form various two and one tier configurations.
As a member of the Choir of Saint Patrick Church, Daniel enjoys the many benefits of these risers.
