The Oakland Nursery store in New Albany, Ohio featured a brick-paved plaza between the original store and the greenhouses that the owner wanted to enclose for expanded retail space and winter plant inventory space. Daniel DeGreve, on behalf of his employer - David B. Meleca Architects - generated for the owner conceptual elevation sketches in his trademark red pencil to illustrate how a rural vernacular building addition consistent with the design of the original store could be utilized to connect the existing facilities and establish a new, more impressive main entrance visible to motorists passing by on U.S. 62. Through these elevation sketches, Daniel obtained the store expansion commission for David B. Meleca Architects, who oversaw the completion of the project in 2015.
During the fall of 2014 and winter of 2015, Daniel developed both the overall design and detail design for the entire 3,000 square foot store expansion, which includes a gracious entrance porch, a pair of monumental glazed barn doors in the front and back of the facility to allow for the movement of inventory by front-end loaders, and a mezzanine offering impressive views of the store expansion interior. Large translucent skylights help to deliver an ample amount of daylight into the building, critical for sustaining plant life.
